Frequently asked questions

Is this calculation a diet plan?

No. The result shows the average daily energy requirement for healthy children. For weight goals, chronic illness or allergies, a dietitian plan is needed.

Which formula is used?

The Estimated Energy Requirement (EER) equations from the US Institute of Medicine 2005 DRI report, including the energy deposition for growth (20-25 kcal/day).

How do I choose the activity level?

"Active" is the right starting point for a child who moves at least 60 minutes most days. Licensed athletes usually fall into the "Very active" band.

Should I worry if the result differs from what my child eats?

Not by itself. What matters is the growth curve: if percentile tracking is normal, energy intake is usually adequate. If percentiles are dropping, consult a clinician.

Is there a separate tool for child athletes?

Yes. Use the Athlete Nutrition Planner, which gives g/kg carbohydrate and protein targets based on training load.
